History
Nigeria, located in West Africa, boasts a rich tapestry of history, marked by the emergence of various civilisations, kingdoms, and empires over the centuries. Notable among these are the Nok civilisation, renowned for its terracotta sculptures dating back to around 500 BC, and the powerful empires of Oyo, Benin, and the Sokoto Caliphate. These entities played significant roles in regional trade, politics, and culture long before colonial influences.
Nigeria achieved independence from British rule on 1 October 1960, with Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa becoming the first Prime Minister. The transition was marked by celebrations and a commitment to unity amidst diversity.
