Petra, Jordan

The Ancient city of Petra is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world and as such, one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. No-one knows exactly when Petra was built, but the city began to prosper as the capital of the Nabataen Arabs from the 1st century BC.  It grew rich from the trade of spices and as an important stop along the Silk Road.

The Nabataeans carved the city out of the sandstone cliffs and buried their dead in intricate tombs that were also cut out of the mountain side.  These beautiful and awe-inspiring carved buildings are found at the end of the Siq, a long and narrow natural gorge that is 1.2km long, with walls up to 70m high.
