Founded by the French, ruled for 40 years by the Spanish and bought by the United States in 1803, New Orleans is known for its distinct Creole culture and vibrant history.
Along with the colourful culture and music scene, New Orleans is best known for Mardi Gras. During the carnival period that begins on the feast of Epiphany and ends on Ash Wednesday, New Orleans becomes party central with weekly parades through the city.
