Examples of documents that require Legalisation:

A birth certificate is a vital record that documents the birth of a person. The term "birth certificate" can refer to either the original document certifying the circumstances of the birth or to a certified copy of or representation of the ensuing registration of that birth. Depending on the jurisdiction, a record of birth might or might not contain verification of the event by such as a midwife or doctor.

The birth certificate is kept in the registry office of the municipality in which someone was born. A duplicate (second version of the deed) is stored at the central repository of the Judicial Information Service in Almelo. This service is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security. A copy of the deed may be requested at various official occasions.

A birth certificate can be requested in the place of birth in the Netherlands. Nowadays this can often be applied for via the internet, which requires a DigiD login. Not everyone can request a copy of the birth certificate. This has to do with privacy and there are costs involved.

Birth certificates are often a required document for working visas or residence visas. In order for the birth certificate to be recognized by the destination country it will need to be legalised - Visa Service Desk can advise and assist you in getting this done correctly.

A Certificate of Conduct (VOG) is a statement showing that your (judicial) past does not constitute an objection to fulfilling a specific task or function in society.

When assessing a VOG application, The Ministry of Justice checks whether you have criminal offenses in your past that pose a risk to the position or purpose for which you are applying for the VOG. Some criminal offenses create an objection to one job or internship, but not to another. A speeding offense can be important, for example, if an applicant wants to become a taxi driver, but not for the position of desk clerk at a bank.

If you do not have a criminal record, or have not committed any criminal offenses that are relevant to the purpose of the application, then you will receive a VOG.

A death certificate is either a legal document issued by a medical practitioner which states when a person died, or a document issued by a government civil registration office, that declares the date, location and cause of a person's death, as entered in an official register of deaths.

An official death certificate is usually required to be provided when applying for probate or administration of a deceased estate. They are also sought for genealogical research. The government registration office would usually be required to provide details of deaths, without production of a death certificate, to enable government agencies to update their records, such as electoral registers, government benefits paid, passport records, etc.

Formerly, the term "power" referred to an instrument signed under seal while a "letter" was an instrument under hand, meaning that it was simply signed by the parties, but today a power of attorney does not need to be signed under seal.

Translations

Official documents such as a driver's license, passport or birth certificate usually have to be translated by a certified translator. Are you going to emigrate? Getting married abroad? Or, for example, getting a divorce in a country other than the Netherlands? Then you will need a certified translator who will translate your document correctly and provide a statement with it to confirm the certified translation.

Visa Service Desk will translate the documents for you. Contact Visa Service Desk to receive a no-obligation quote.

Notarial services

Notarial services for legalisations are mainly having your signature legalised or having a certified copy made.

When having your signature legalised, it is established that you are indeed the person signing the power of attorney / statement yourself. In this way, no disagreement can arise afterwards about the authenticity of your signature and the risk of misuse is greatly reduced.

Another notarial service is to have a certified (true) copy made. A certified copy certifies that the content of the copy corresponds to the original document.

Visa Service Desk offers notarial services to ensure that your documents are considered substantively correct and legally valid.
