Havana, Cuba
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the early 16th century and was used by them as a staging ground for the conquest of the Americas. It became an important center of trade between Europe and the Americas and was heavily fortified by the Spanish.
Cuba finally became independent in 1902, starting the republican period which saw a new era of development and the growth of the 3rd largest middle class in the northern hemisphere. In 1959 there was a revolution and the country became a communist regime, led by Fidel Castro. Due to this revolution, the USA placed an embargo on Cuba which had a lasting effect on how that country has developed up to today.
Havanna is a city that boasts some of the most diverse styles of architecture in the world and offers a wide variety of museums, palaces, public squares, churches and fortresses. This coupled with the vibrant culture, music and nightlife make Havanna a very popular tourist destination.
